Registry requirements for .UK domain

Nominet, the registry for all .UK domains, released the shorter and sharper .uk domain back in June 2014. With this release came a few conditions in order to make the registration process fair to those who already held .co.uk, .ltd.uk, .org.uk, etc. domains.

If you have a .co.uk domain, the .uk equivalent of that domain will be reserved for you for 5 years, during which time no-one else can register that domain.
Once the five year period has ended, if you have not registered the domain, it will become available for general release, at which time anyone can register the domain.

The .uk domain must be registered with exactly the same details as the .co.uk domain, so make sure your contact information is up-to-date for your domain.

If you register a .uk domain with a different registrar than your .co.uk domain, Nominet will automatically put the registration on hold until the registration has been verified. This will involve an email being sent to the registrant email address, asking you to confirm that you registered the domain and your details are correct.

If there is no .co.uk equivalent to the .uk domain you want to register, the domain is free for registration at any time.
