A mail exchanger record (MX record) specifies the mail server responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of a recipient's domain, and a preference value used to prioritize mail delivery if multiple mail servers are available. MX records are vital when using a domain for email. Without the correct MX settings, email may be bounced back or delivered to the wrong server. If you are not using your domain for mail, an MX record is not necessary.
